E.T.A. HOFFMANN: Théâtre du Châtelet
Paris, Théâtre du Châtelet — Main Hall
About the Event
Born 250 years ago, Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann was one of the great figures of early Romanticism. He is remembered primarily for his literary activities: he was a music critic and writer — inspiring Schumann to write his Kreisleriana, after his pen name Kreisler, and Offenbach to write Les Contes d'Hoffmann. Some of Hoffmann's tales feature composers. Gluck is the main character in Chevalier Gluck, published in 1809. So enamoured was he of Mozart that he had his third name changed to ‘Amadeus’, Hoffmann was also a multi‐instrumentalist, conductor and composer. The author of several operas and vocal works, he also composed a number of chamber music pieces and a symphony characteristic of the early Romantic period. Written a few years before his famous reviews of Beethoven's symphonies, this Symphony in E flat major is beautifully crafted and marked by the influence of Haydn and Mozart. Once upon a time… E. T. A. Hoffmann, in music and readings.
