About the Event

Throughout his life, Gershwin blended the European classical tradition with American popular culture, incorporating, in particular, the flexibility and freedom of jazz. Composed when he was only 26, his *Rhapsody in Blue* is a perfect example of this. Resembling a piano concerto without adhering to its formal structure, it unfolds in a single, continuous movement. An excellent improviser, Gershwin invented some of the solos during the premiere, later transcribing them. With the Concerto in F—his only true concerto—the musician followed the same path. A symphonic poem composed a few years later, *An American in Paris* captures his impressions of the French capital and, here too, fuses musical cultures.

Alongside Éric Le Sage, the Ellipsos saxophone quartet brings brilliant and warm colors to this repertoire, highlighting its natural connection to the world of jazz.
