About the Event

In composing *Il Vespro della Beata Vergine*, Monteverdi aimed to demonstrate his absolute mastery of both the *stile antico* (the grand polyphony inherited from the Renaissance) and the *stile moderno* (he had just premiered *L’Orfeo* in 1607, the birth of modern opera). In a highly symbolic gesture, the work opens with the flamboyant instrumental toccata from *L’Orfeo*, accompanied by the text “Deus in adjutorium meum intende.” What follows is a dazzling fusion of counterpoint and solo vocal line, enhanced by a sparkling instrumental arrangement.

The Ensemble InAlto, conducted by Lambert Colson, sets out to renew our vision of an incomparable masterpiece of Western musical history.
In this exciting challenge, the ensemble can rely on a group of singers and instrumentalists who are among the foremost experts in this repertoire.
