Ensemble Doulce Mémoire: Oratoire du Louvre
Paris, Eglise de l'Oratoire du Louvre — Main Hall
About the Event
A “mythical” work within the already rich repertoire of Renaissance polyphony, *The Tears of Saint Peter* stands as Roland de Lassus’s ultimate masterpiece, completed in 1594, the very year of his death. At the twilight of his life, the great master delivered a sublime lament that combines contrapuntal mastery with the direct expressiveness that is his hallmark. It is true that the episode in the Gospels depicting Saint Peter’s denial—in which he turns his back on Christ—offers poetic possibilities of incomparable power. Another composer, Lodovico Agostini, had left behind, a few years earlier, an equally moving score, *Les Larmes du Pécheur* (The Tears of the Sinner). In a poignant coincidence, like Lassus, Agostini completed his masterpiece in the year of his death (1586).
This program is the last one brought to fruition by Denis Raisin Dadre at the helm of Doulce Mémoire, before he leaves us in September 2025. One could not imagine a more moving tribute from an ensemble to its conductor and founder.
