About the Event
Katarina Livljanić and her ensemble Dialogos have come to be known for their fascinating projects: far from merely bringing the music of the golden ages to life through flawless performances, they place it within its cultural and social context, breathing life into legendary figures.
This is once again the case with “Nexus Winchester,” which depicts a famous episode in the religious history of the British Isles: On February 19, 964, the renowned Bishop Aethelwold expelled the thoroughly depraved canons (who had even attempted to poison the bishop) from his cathedral in Winchester, replacing them with far more virtuous monks from the monastery at Abingdon. Drawing on the *Vita Sancti Aetheluuoldi* written by the poet Wulfstan—a friend of the bishop and himself a cantor at the cathedral—as well as the *Winchester Troparion*, Katarina Livljanić reconstructs this “coup” a thousand years later. In particular, she brings it to life through sound with hypnotic passages in which monody and polyphony intertwine.
