About the Event

Alongside Palestrina, Victoria stands out as the greatest genius of 16th‐century religious polyphony. Born in Spain and trained in Rome, he returned to his native country with, in his luggage, an absolute mastery of counterpoint, into which he infused a unique Spanish expressiveness. He left behind a body of work of remarkable scope, both in terms of quantity and poetic richness, within which a significant corpus of Responsories stands out. Here, the dark intensity characteristic of Iberian musicians of the time—undoubtedly influenced by the rigor of the Catholic Church in the kingdom—is on full display. Victoria demonstrates his immense compositional virtuosity, while maintaining a modesty that goes straight to the heart.

Drawing on the perfection and proverbial dedication of his ensemble Cantoría, Jorge Losana reconstructs the *Leçons de Ténèbres* by drawing from these sublime works.
