Don Giovanni: Paris Opera

About the Event

Who is Don Juan? The question remains unanswered, for this character, seen throughout history as a “great lord and wicked man”, a charming seducer, or a toxic predator, defies any definitive description. In his opera, premiered in Prague in 1787 with the complicity of his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart does not resolve Don Giovanni’s contradictions, but rather establishes the myth through its expressive power and tragic depth.

From the breathtaking overture to the fatal dinner with the Commendatore, not to mention the catalogue aria, his dramma giocoso, a subtle blend of comedy and drama, leaves no one unmoved. Director Louisa Proske, making her debut at the Paris Opera, sets the action in a grand hotel, a place where social structures can be transgressed and the protagonists’ deepest fantasies revealed.
