Dazzling: Orchestre Pasdeloup
Paris, Philharmonie de Paris — Grande Salle: Pierre Boulez
About the Event
The Orchestre Pasdeloup performs Rachmaninoff and Brahms in the prestigious Philharmonie de Paris.
The sound waves of *Radiant Circles*, the youthful exuberance and powerful lyricism of Rachmaninoff, and one of the most beloved symphonies in the Romantic repertoire: a programme rich in nuances.
*Radiant Circles*, by composer Augusta Read Thomas, begins in a suspended, crystalline atmosphere, the music transforming into swirling spirals before culminating in an energetic fanfare. Composed by a musician barely 18 years old, whilst still a student at the Conservatoire, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1 – his Opus 1 – remains one of his most endearing works. It culminates in the monumental solo cadenza of its first movement. The premiere of Symphony No. 3 in 1883 marked one of Brahms’s greatest triumphs: ‘the tributes paid to the composer reached a level of enthusiasm almost never before equalled in Vienna’, wrote his biographer Max Kalbeck. Clara Schumann was a fervent admirer: ‘What a work, what poetry!’
