About the Event
The combination of string instruments with the crystalline sound of the transverse flute brings out the eloquence and grace of the classical style. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, inspired compositions emerged from this all‐too‐rarely used ensemble. The most remarkable examples come from the pen of Mozart. The “Adagio” from his Quartet for Flute and Strings, K. 285—a jewel of the art galant—is “a piece of the most exquisite melancholy, perhaps the most beautiful solo with accompaniment ever written for the flute” (Alfred Einstein).
Unfortunately overshadowed by his eminent contemporaries, Dotzauer is known almost exclusively to cellists. His Quartet, Op. 38, however, displays a refinement entirely in the Mozartian spirit. Trained as a flutist, Reicha met Haydn and played alongside Beethoven in Bonn before emigrating to Paris. It was there that he composed his Quartets for Flute and Strings, Op. 98. He followed the Viennese classical tradition while incorporating personal touches and a wealth of original ideas.
