About the Event

Charpentier's Te Deum and Bach's Magnificat in the sumptuous Eglise Saint‐Germain Des Prés with the Orchestre and Choir Paul Kuentz.

The Magnificat is one of Bach’s most iconic works. Its key of D major lends it the optimistic and grateful character of Mary’s exultation at the news of her impending motherhood, and gives her personal reaction a universal resonance, which is further enhanced by the trumpets.

More directly, Marc‐Antoine Charpentier’s Te Deum also conveys an exalted message of gratitude expressed in the same key of D major, likewise with the support of the trumpet. It is a commemorative work written to mark a victory of Louis XIV. It was long forgotten, then rediscovered in 1953. Its success was such that the ‘European Broadcasting Union’ chose its opening bars as the theme tune for ‘Eurovision’ broadcasts. Thus, its first performance had the privilege of introducing the Eurovision broadcast of the coronation of Elizabeth II in June 1953.

You too will have the privilege of hearing it at this concert given by Paul Kuentz’s orchestra, choir and soloists, conducted by Paul Kuentz himself.
