Bach's St Matthew Passion: Théâtre des Champs‐Elysées
Paris, Théâtre des Champs‐Élysées — Main Hall
About the Event
The colossal St Matthew Passion, both in its form and duration, is a landmark in the choral works of the Cantor of Leipzig.
In the interval between the St John Passion and the St Matthew Passion, Bach focused on developing his musical experience and brought a number of innovations to his writing. He increased the breadth of the sound as far as possible by adding a third choir and made the recitative more varied. This masterpiece marked the end of a long series of Passions in the history of music. With a few rare exceptions, all later works were not Passions in the liturgical sense as understood by Bach, but paved the way for the oratorio form.
