St. James Theatre
New York, USA
The St. James Theater is one of Broadway’s biggest, with a starry history and a sparkling present. Built in 1927 by the impresario Abraham Erlanger on the site of the original Sardi’s restaurant on West 44th Street, the St. James quickly became as much a Broadway institution as the restaurant it displaced. The simple exterior and ornate auditorium have hosted numerous landmark premieres — 'Oklahoma!', 'The King and I', 'Hello, Dolly!' and 'The Producers' all began here.
Seating over 1,700 attendees over three levels, the theater is ideal for large‐scale musicals, even more so since the 2017 renovations necessary to host the musical version of Disney’s ‘Frozen’. The St. James has also taken a starring role on screen, playing a key role in the films ‘Birdman’ and ‘Manhattan’.
