Ambassador Theatre
New York, USA
The Ambassador Theater, situated between Broadway and 8th Avenue on West 49th Street, is one of the Herbert J. Krapp‐designed grandes dames of Broadway theaters. Built for the Shuberts, the theater opened in 1921, and its unremarkable façade hides an intriguing secret. Although no outward sign is apparent, the auditorium is constructed on a diagonal within the building, in order to create the biggest possible seating capacity.
The Ambassador has hosted numerous successful plays and musicals, including the Broadway productions of ‘The Lion in Winter’ and ‘Godspell’. A designated New York City landmark, the 1920s Ambassador has been home to the long‐running jazz‐age musical ‘Chicago’ since 2003.
