About the Event

Exploring three distinctive musical voices of the twentieth century, this program brings together the lyricism of Ottorino Respighi, the theatrical wit of Igor Stravinsky, and the youthful brilliance of Dmitri Shostakovich.

The evening opens with Respighi’s *Adagio con variazioni* for cello and orchestra, a work of expressive warmth and lyrical intensity that places the solo instrument at the center of an intimate and richly colored musical dialogue.

Stravinsky’s *Concert Suite from Pulcinella* follows, reimagining eighteenth‐century musical models through a modern lens. Inspired by the world of *commedia dell’arte*, the work combines elegance, humor, and rhythmic vitality, revealing the composer’s distinctive neoclassical style.

The program concludes with Shostakovich’s *Symphony No. 1 in F minor*, Op. 10, an astonishing debut that established the young composer as a major musical talent. Blending wit, dramatic contrasts, and remarkable orchestral imagination, the symphony already displays many of the qualities that would define Shostakovich’s mature voice.

Conducted by Luigi Piovano, the concert traces a fascinating path through some of the most original and inventive musical languages of the twentieth century.

Orchestra: Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi

Known colloquially as 'La Verdi', Milan's famed symphony orchestra was formed in the early 90s to supplement the city's already‐generous cultural offering. Making its home in Milan's Auditorio, La Verdi features among Europe's most respected and admired symphonic ensembles. Its first Musical Director, Ricardo Chailly, now holds the title of Conductor Laureate, while the Austrian conductor, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, a fast‐rising star in the orchestral firmament took over the role of Musical Director in 2024, following in the footsteps of several major names in the classical world. La Verdi welcomes a starry roster of soloists and guest conductors over the course of an extensive and varied annual season, and regularly features as guests of honour at important state occasions and international concert engagements.
