About the Event

From the elegance of Haydn to the lyrical vitality of Dvořák, this program traces a fascinating path through the Classical and Romantic traditions, highlighting the enduring richness and versatility of the orchestral repertoire.

The evening opens with Joseph Haydn’s *Symphony No. 68 in B‐flat major*, a work that combines formal balance, inventive orchestral writing, and the wit that made Haydn one of the defining figures of the Classical era.

Brahms’s *Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn*, Op. 56a, follows, transforming a simple musical idea into a series of imaginative and richly characterized variations. One of the composer’s most accomplished orchestral works, it demonstrates both his mastery of form and his deep engagement with the musical past.

The program concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s *Symphony No. 8 in G major*, Op. 88, a work celebrated for its melodic abundance, vibrant rhythms, and luminous orchestration. Inspired by the landscapes and folk traditions of Bohemia, the symphony radiates warmth, optimism, and a profound connection to nature.

Conducted by Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, the concert brings together three composers whose music continues to captivate audiences through its elegance, imagination, and expressive power.

Orchestra: Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi

Known colloquially as 'La Verdi', Milan's famed symphony orchestra was formed in the early 90s to supplement the city's already‐generous cultural offering. Making its home in Milan's Auditorio, La Verdi features among Europe's most respected and admired symphonic ensembles. Its first Musical Director, Ricardo Chailly, now holds the title of Conductor Laureate, while the Austrian conductor, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, a fast‐rising star in the orchestral firmament took over the role of Musical Director in 2024, following in the footsteps of several major names in the classical world. La Verdi welcomes a starry roster of soloists and guest conductors over the course of an extensive and varied annual season, and regularly features as guests of honour at important state occasions and international concert engagements.
