About the Event

Inspired by the sea in all its beauty, power, and mystery, this program brings together four orchestral masterpieces that transform water, weather, and maritime landscapes into sound.

The journey begins with Benjamin Britten’s *Four Sea Interludes* from *Peter Grimes*, a vivid orchestral portrait of the sea as both setting and protagonist. Jean Sibelius’s *The Oceanides* follows with its shimmering textures and evocative depiction of waves, wind, and shifting light.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s *The Tempest* draws on Shakespeare’s play to create a richly dramatic symphonic fantasy, while Claude Debussy’s *La Mer* concludes the evening with its celebrated portrayal of the sea’s changing moods, from calm expanses to surging energy.

Conducted by Jac van Steen, the program explores the many ways composers have been inspired by the sea, revealing a remarkable range of orchestral colors, atmospheres, and expressive possibilities.
