About the Event
Madrid’s Teatro Real welcomes an extraordinary encounter with the legacy of one of contemporary dance’s most influential visionaries.
Since 1980, the Tanztheater Wuppertal has combined Café Müller (created in 1978) and The Rite of Spring (created in 1975)—two works by Pina Bausch that seem to come from opposite worlds—into a single program. In contrast to the stark simplicity, minimal gestures, and the music of Henry Purcell in *Café Müller*, the rhythmic violence and collective energy of Igor Stravinsky’s score take center stage on a set covered in damp mud, whose sludge coats the dancers’ bodies and accentuates the primitive nature of the sacrifice. Pina Bausch performed her role in *Café Müller* until shortly before her death in 2009 since then, it has been taken on by new generations of dancers.
