Mats Ek once again challenged norms with Juliet & Romeo, his unique reinterpretation of the Shakespearean tale for the Royal Swedish Ballet. Crafted in 2013 to honor the company’s 240th anniversary, this choreography breaks from Prokofiev’s composition, opting instead for a selection of Tchaikovsky pieces. By inverting the title, the ballet not only emphasizes Juliet’s pivotal role but also signals a twist on the traditional narrative: Ek's bold style, characterized by unusual, defiant movements and the omission of iconic elements like the balcony, swords, or the poison vial, places the young lovers at the heart of the drama.
