RPO x Vasily Petrenko: Strauss — Also sprach Zarathustra
London, Royal Albert Hall — Main Hall
About the Event
Vasily Petrenko raises his baton. The air shimmers, a trumpet pierces the darkness, and the entire universe explodes in magnificent sound. When Richard Strauss composed “Thus Spoke Zarathustra,” he set out to tell the entire history of humanity through music, and from the earth‐shaking opening to the enigmatic conclusion, it is an incredible journey—a fitting climax for a concert brimming with emotions and ideas of truly heroic proportions.
Beethoven’s Fifth and final piano concerto is so stirring and majestic that his contemporaries called it the “Emperor” it will be performed tonight by Elisabeth Leonskaja, an artist who has dedicated her long and distinguished career to interpreting Beethoven’s works.
The evening begins with the eternal struggle between the human spirit and the pleasures of the senses: Wagner’s rousing overture to “Tannhäuser.” Music that makes the heart beat faster, played with heart and soul.
