About the Event

Genius thrives on challenge. Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto opens with a chord deemed impossible, yet for an exceptional violinist like RPO Artist‐in‐Residence Liya Petrova (‘Exquisite’: The Guardian), the impossible is simply routine. This elegant piece shines at the core of a concert rich with melodies dear to Ukrainian guest conductor Kirill Karabits. Some are less known, such as the radiant tones and lush harmonies of Angel, a seldom‐heard (well, in Britain at least) masterwork by Ukrainian composer Fyodor Akimenko. However, others have gained immense popularity, and rightfully so. Ukrainian folk tunes inspired Tchaikovsky's vibrant ‘Little Russian’ Symphony. Yet the emotion – and the magic – is uniquely his, leaving you with an urge to dance.

Program

  • Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 2 in C minor, op. 17 'Little Russian'
  • Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky – Violin Concerto
  • Fjodor Akimenko – Angel: Poem‐Nocturne
Program is subject to change
