RPO: Sibelius Violin Concerto
London, Cadogan Hall — Main Hall
About the Event
During the darkest days of World War II, 70‐year‐old Ralph Vaughan Williams composed a symphony that sounded like a vision of peace. From its misty opening to its visionary conclusion, the Fifth Symphony showcases Vaughan Williams at his best: expansive, expressive, and of ravishing beauty. Yet it also has dramatic elements, and on this evening, conductor Adam Hickox juxtaposes it with two powerful and evocative soundscapes of the 20th century by Vaughan Williams’ contemporaries. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture is bold and defiant—the work of a woman who spoke with her own voice in communist Poland. And RPO Artist‐in‐Residence Liya Petrova explores the fire and ice of Sibelius’s mighty Violin Concerto: a captivating display of the “beautiful tone” (Sunday Times) of this award‐winning violinist.
