RPO: Sibelius Violin Concerto
London, Cadogan Hall — Main Hall
About the Event
Amid the darkest days of World War II, 70‐year‐old Ralph Vaughan Williams crafted a symphony that evoked a vision of peace. From its ethereal opening to its visionary finale, the Fifth Symphony captures Vaughan Williams at his finest: expansive, expressive, and of stunning beauty. Yet, it also incorporates dramatic elements, and in this performance, conductor Adam Hickox positions it alongside two compelling and evocative soundscapes from the 20th century by Vaughan Williams' contemporaries. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture is bold and defiant—the creation of a woman who expressed her unique voice in communist Poland. Meanwhile, RPO Artist‐in‐Residence Liya Petrova delves into the fire and ice of Sibelius’s powerful Violin Concerto: a mesmerizing showcase of the “beautiful tone” (Sunday Times) of this acclaimed violinist.
