About the Event

Franz Liszt once described, 'The forests, the cascading Danube, the wide, open fields… this is my homeland, this wild, untamed nation!' Known for his grand gestures, Liszt was deeply inspired by the folk music of Hungary, igniting his imagination with fervor. This concert, led by RPO Associate Conductor Emilia Hoving, embodies that fiery spirit, celebrating raw rhythms, profound yearning, and melodies as vibrant as paprika. Zoltán Kodály unfolds a grand musical fairytale, while his colleague Bartók pays tribute to the foundation of Budapest, setting a series of dances along the Danube. The performance begins with Liszt's own compositions, crafted by the legendary pianist. This poses no challenge for soloist János Balázs, a Hungarian pianist, who confidently claims, 'I'm a real romantic.'
