About the Event

Anticipate the unpredictable. The Soviet regime expected Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony to be a grandiose masterpiece, yet they received a sardonic spectacle with a playful wit – music that delights while simultaneously undermining. No surprise it was banned! Beethoven’s Violin Concerto opens with a drum solo and a woodwind hymn, gradually revealing the violin’s poetic, vocal essence. Dobrinka Tabakova – a British composer skilled in storytelling – draws inspiration from bees in her lively, Ivor Novello Award‐winning ode to life. Delyana Lazarova conducted the debut of Swarm Fanfares, and she’ll be an inspiring partner to RPO Artist‐in‐Residence Liya Petrova as she takes flight in Beethoven’s luminous Violin Concerto.

Program

  • Ludwig van Beethoven – Violin Concerto
  • Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich – Symphony No.9
  • Dobrinka Tabakova – Swarm Fanfares (London premiere)
Program is subject to change
