London Firebird Orchestra: Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto
London, St. George´s Church (Hanover Square) — main hall
About the Event
Experience a captivating evening of classical splendor with the London Firebird Orchestra: Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto at the historic St. George’s Church in Hanover Square.
Lauded by Seen & Heard International as “full of fire and brimstone” and “as full‐blooded as possible,” Firebird’s Artistic Director Marc Corbett‐Weaver takes the stage as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s celebrated Piano Concerto no. 1.
Initially deemed unplayable by Nikolai Rubenstein, this concerto begins with a renowned romantic theme – inspired by folk musicians in Kiev's market – which seamlessly connects to the composition's primary melodies.
This Russian‐themed concert wraps up the orchestra’s 14th season, succeeding a similar June 2025 performance that highlighted a Rachmaninoff Concerto and a Tchaikovsky Symphony.
Continuing the theme tonight, we interchange the composers and genres. Like his Piano Concerto no. 2, crafted during his post‐depression era, Rachmaninoff’s Symphony no. 2 also brought him a Glinka Award and was met with great acclaim.
George Jackson leads the orchestra, fresh from his performances with the Amarillo Orchestra in Texas and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
Program
- Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto no. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23
- Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff – Symphony no. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
