Salon Music
Leipzig, Gewandhaus zu Leipzig — Grosser Saal
About the Event
The name of the series is actually misleading, because the music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—undoubtedly entertaining—as it was heard in coffee houses, on variety and cabaret stages, in private salons, and theaters, is a reflection of social and political trends. The series therefore does not invite nostalgic raving about a supposedly “better time,” but rather provides artistically condensed insights into a not‐too‐distant zeitgeist that allow us to draw insightful conclusions about the present.
Founded in 1989, the Cappuccino Salon Orchestra has developed a program spectrum that ranges from the early beginnings of salon music in Vienna to opera and operetta repertoire to political programs such as World War propaganda, GDR cultural policy, and emigration stories. With violinistic finesse and a profound knowledge of the history of the musical salon, standing violinist and master of ceremonies Albrecht Winter conducts and presents the concerts at the Gewandhaus.
