About the Event

In 1983, a series devoted exclusively to new music was established at the Gewandhaus for the first time, with composer Friedrich Schenker serving as dramaturg. One year after Steffen Schleiermacher founded the Ensemble Avantgarde in 1989, the composer and pianist succeeded Friedrich Schenker as dramaturge, but also as performer, conductor, and presenter of the series, which has been called musica nova since the 1990/1991 season. Schleiermacher and the Ensemble Avantgarde stage most of the unusual concert programs themselves, but also regularly invite top‐class performers of new music to the Gewandhaus..
