Gettysburg
Famously known as the site of the largest military conflict on the North American continent, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is visited almost 1.5 million people every year. And, in 2013 on the 150th Anniversary of the battle, experts say that 4 million people will visit this small town of 8,000 in the heart of central Pennsylvania.
While the shadow of the American Civil War battle looms large here, Gettysburg is also the location that Abraham Lincoln delivered his brief two-minute speech – the Gettysburg Address – now one of the most well-known pieces of oratory ever. Gettysburg was also the only permanent home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower – the Allied Commander during World War II.
Gettysburg’s main streets are lined with beautifully restored historic homes, quaint shops, charming restaurants and bed and breakfasts.
