Dresdner Musikfestspiele: Opening Gala, Music meets Humor — Schubert, Vogler, Dresdner Philharmonie, Berglund
Dresden, Kulturpalast
About the Event
In keeping with its motto, the Dresden Music Festival is opening its 49th festival season with a special program dedicated to the “LIGHTNESS OF BEING.” After all, going to a concert doesn't have to be a serious affair—or does it? It is precisely this appealing tension between humorous lightness and artistic seriousness that makes the opening night so unique. The cheerful counterbalance is provided by the “wonder in a slipover”: Olaf Schubert, master of the subtle (Saxon) culture of laughter, guides the audience through the evening with his unmistakable mixture of irony and charm. On the musical side are cellist and festival director Jan Vogler, the Dresden Philharmonic, and its principal guest conductor Tabita Berglund. Together they present a program rich in contrasts: from Weber's sparkling “Oberon” overture to Henri Dutilleux's cello concerto and Mussorgsky's imaginative “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Dutilleux's work, composed to poems by Baudelaire, is considered unique: it combines inner depth with poetic lightness in a way that no other piece for cello and orchestra has ever achieved – an opening gala that combines wit, depth, lightness, seriousness, and the diversity of musical expression in one evening.
Program

- Henri Dutilleux – 'Tout un monde lointain…' for cello and orchestra
