About the Event

Hardly any other orchestra is as closely linked to the history and tradition of European music as the Vienna Philharmonic. When this exceptional orchestra, now conducted by Tugan Sokhiev—recently praised by the press as brilliant, serious, and highly musical—travels to Dresden with the charismatic American star violinist Hilary Hahn as soloist, a true dream combination can be experienced at the Kulturpalast. The musicians have two highlights of the Romantic repertoire in their repertoire: Dvořák's violin concerto, with its direct use of the violin, which was unusual for its time, already thrilled audiences at its premiere in 1883 – a masterpiece for three‐time Grammy winner Hahn. And what better way to end the evening than with excerpts from Prokofiev's “Romeo and Juliet,” one of the most important ballets ever written, with its beguiling melodic richness.

Award‐winning American violinist Hilary Hahn embarked on her musical education at the age of four, enrolling on the prestigious Suzuki program at Baltimore’s Peabody Institute. She later became a student of Klara Berkovich and Jascha Brodsky at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, immersing herself in a rich repertoire of works by Kreutzer, Ševčik, Rode, and Paganini. Ms. Hahn made her international debut in 1995, performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major with the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra, and recorded her first album for Sony in 1996 at the age of 16. She has since gone on to record 14 albums and has played in both symphonic and chamber settings, picking up two Grammy awards and earning a reputation as a dazzling soloist and interpreter of both established and contemporary works along the way.
