Dresdner Musikfestspiele: Dramatic masterpiece — Giuseppe Verdi: Messa da Requiem
Dresden, Frauenkirche Dresden
About the Event
In 1874, Giuseppe Verdi, the undisputed king of Italian opera, composed a requiem and astonished the music world. His Messa da Requiem is effective and does not deny the dramatic means of music, but rather uses them to great effect. A revolution! He commented on the emerging power struggle between the church and art with a wink: “I am working on my mass, and with the greatest pleasure. It seems to me that I have become a serious person and am no longer the audience's buffoon, beating the drum and shouting ‘Come in, come in’.” Now this impressive work can be experienced in the Frauenkirche with the Dresden Festival Orchestra, the newly founded Dresden Festival Choir, and an outstanding ensemble of soloists. Lan Shui, one of the great conductors from the Far East, will be at the podium. The audience is invited to experience Verdi's masterpiece—performed on historical instruments—in all its density, grandeur, and power.
