About the Event

Karl Böhm was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. But regardless of his artistic achievements, the musician was also a controversial figure—because of his conformity during the Nazi era. In 1934, he was appointed to the Semperoper in Dresden as the successor to Fritz Busch, whom the Nazi regime had forced to resign and emigrate. In 1943, he became director of the Vienna State Opera, was dismissed by the Allies after the war and banned from performing, and was even brought back to this position a second time from 1955 to 1956. Nikolaus Habjan, a gifted puppet maker and puppeteer by trade, deals with this dark chapter in European music history in “Böhm.” In an outstanding and widely acclaimed theater performance with 11 puppets, he brings the life and work of the conductor to the stage. Habjan, who plays all the puppets, creates a fascinating psychogram—absurd, humorous, bitterly serious, and virtuosic.
