About the Event

FIRE AND WATER
A piano recital with Hamburg pianist Mathias Weber and poems recited by Stephanie Weber.

Following his huge success in January 2025, Hamburg pianist Mathias Weber returns to the Bechstein Centrum Dresden. This time with a special program entitled “Fire and Water.” Let yourself be enchanted by the sparkling, rushing or calmly undulating sounds of water and the brilliantly crackling, blazing impressions of fire presented musically and poetically.

Fire and water: these two completely contrasting natural phenomena have inspired many composers to set them to music. The result is a multitude of compositions in different styles. Beethoven's Sonata Op. 31 encapsulates the theme in the grand form of the sonata. The contrast between the infinite sea and an island evoked in the second movement, on which a peaceful society develops, allows for a dramatic climax. The other works in the program highlight various aspects of the elements of fire and water. Scriabin's “Vers la flamme” vividly depicts the ignition of a blazing fire. In Debussy's highly virtuosic “Feu d'artifice,” we can witness the fireworks on the occasion of the French national holiday. Manuel De Falla's “Fire Dance” is used in Carlos Saura's film “Carmen” as a central, deeply emotional flamenco piece. The “water pieces” in the program, on the other hand, reveal a flowing style of composition. Both the “Venetian Gondola Song” and the “Jeux d'Eaux” and “Ondine” are poetically inspired musical visions full of mystery.
