Between Longing and Sound – Chopin & Georges Sand in Mallorca and Nohant, a musical and literary evening with Mathias and Stephanie Weber at Coselpalais Dresden

About the Event

Part I: Mallorca
Experience a unique literary and musical evening that takes you on a journey back to the 19th century: During the winter of 1838–39, Frédéric Chopin and Georges Sand spent several months in Valldemossa, Mallorca. There, they battled the harsh winter winds, the cold of the mountains, and health challenges, finding strength and solace in music, nature, and mutual inspiration.
The 24 Préludes, Op. 28, composed there, will be performed in four consecutive sections, ranging from light, playful moments to stormy drama and quiet reflection.
On this evening, pianist Mathias Weber will perform Chopin’s 24 Préludes in four thematic blocks that reflect the shifting moods of their time on the island—from a sense of new beginnings and adventure, through stormy drama, to quiet reflection.
Before each section, Stephanie Weber will read texts by Georges Sand that offer insights into her thoughts, the landscape of Mallorca, and the close connection between the two artists. Chopin called his Préludes “masterpieces.” They are brief vignettes full of life, joy, sorrow, and memory.


Part II – Nohant
After intermission, we transport ourselves to the quiet, rural idyll of Nohant, Georges Sand’s French estate, where ballads, mazurkas, nocturnes, and a waltz bring to life the intimacy of domestic life, memories of Chopin’s homeland, the harmony between art and everyday life, homesickness, and the special relationship between the composer and the writer.
The selected texts by Georges Sand include scenes from Nohant, her reflections on music, nature, and everyday life, which mirror the moods of the music and weave them together dramatically.
This evening blends music, literature, and history into a rich, emotional experience, in which Mathias Weber brings Chopin’s musical worlds to life with the utmost sensitivity. Enjoy an evening full of poetry, longing, and musical depth.
