About the Event
“I must walk a path from which no one has ever returned…” In Schubert’s “Winterreise,” a traveler wounded by unrequited love wanders through a desolate winter landscape, longing for the peace of death. This song cycle is one of Schubert’s last and, at the same time, one of his most poignant. In the concentrated form of the song, Schubert succeeds like no other in evoking a broad spectrum of emotions: from intense longing to a bottomless sense of conflict and abandonment. Baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Markus Hinterhäuser, who have been performing the cycle together for years, immerse themselves in these 24 dramatic songs, while a video by the renowned visual artist and our Grand Invité, William Kentridge, further explores the emotions.
