Salzburger Marionettentheater & Ensemble Isabelle Faust
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Salle M Zaal
About the Event
A fairy tale about a deserter, the devil, a violin, and a princess. We know that things rarely end well when the devil is involved—and the Russian musical “L’Histoire du Soldat” is no exception. Igor Stravinsky wrote this work in the war‐torn year of 1918 “to be read, played, and sung,” envisioning a performance by a small theater troupe or even outdoors. The original stage design, inspired both aesthetically and practically by traveling fairs and traveling theater companies, evokes images of street musicians. The Salzburg Marionette Theater and director Matthias Bundschuh have the puppets—designed by German artist Georg Baselitz (!)—dance to Stravinsky’s jazz‐inspired score. The aptly named Isabelle Faust takes up the violin to unleash the devil.
