Pygmalion & Raphael Pichon
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
At the beginning of the 17th century, all composers in Germany sought to return to the Italian source: Venice. The city’s sonic architecture and the triumph of polyphony cast their shadow far into Lutheran territory. But the Thirty Years’ War interrupted this momentum. German expression became more intimate, as in Schütz’s “Kleine Geistliche Konzerte,” the descendants of Italian motets for solo voice and continuo. The Paris‐based Baroque ensemble Pygmalion brings together the most significant German and Italian masters in a large ensemble under the banner of VERTIGO: Praetorius, Scheidt, Monteverdi, and Cavalli respond to one another in a play of echoes, in which polyphony culminates in jubilation, exuberance, and sensuality. In short: Look forward to a celebration of the fusion that has shaped European music.
