London Symphony Orchestra, Pappano & Vengerov
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
Shostakovich composed his Eighth Symphony in 1943, during the infamous Battle of Stalingrad. It is the second of his three war symphonies and undoubtedly his most tragic work. Airy strings open the piece over growling basses with drawn‐out, interwoven melodies. This is a very different beginning from the four soft beats of the timpani in Beethoven’s only violin concerto. Some believe that the recurring timpani motif in the first movement reflects the euphoric mood that prevailed during the French Revolution. Under the baton of Antonio Pappano, the renowned London Symphony Orchestra performs these masterpieces, both of which bear the marks of history. Acclaimed violinist Maxim Vengerov takes the solo.
