About the Event
The Violin Sonata No. 9, also known as the “Kreutzer Sonata,” is the most famous of Beethoven’s ten sonatas for violin and piano. Rodolphe Kreutzer, to whom the sonata was dedicated, refused to perform it in public because he considered it “unplayable.” The “Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung,” one of the most important music journals of the time, even described it as “musical terrorism.” It is true that the sonata places exceptionally high demands on the technical mastery and intelligence of the performers. Yet throughout the evening, Leonidas Kavakos and Enrico Pace prove that, amidst perfect harmonies and sharp musical contrasts, they remain the best of friends.
