About the Event

The Quatuor Diotima, which has been regarded as a fearless champion of new music since its founding, has set its sights on the far north. The focus is on “Nymphéa,” in which Kaija Saariaho uses electronics to create unique sounds and reveal an organic soundscape that is constantly shifting. Kristine Tjøgersen also enjoys playing with sound transformations. Her quartet “Mystérios do Corpo” is a tribute to the Brazilian jazz composer Hermeto Pascoal, who is known for his unconventional way of making music—even on his own body. In her work, Tjøgersen transforms physical movements into musical gestures. Finally, in “Enigma,” our featured artist Anna Thorvaldsdottir explores a gradually shifting soundscape in which drawn‐out melodic movements transform almost imperceptibly. At the request of Ars Musica, Belgian composer Frédéric Verrière has written intermezzos that connect these impressive quartets from the North.
