Filarmonica della Scala, Chailly & Gerstein
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
Conducting a world‐famous orchestra in his hometown? It sounds like a childhood dream, but for Riccardo Chailly, standing at the podium in front of the Filarmonica della Scala simply means coming home. Nevertheless, in this concert program, he looks beyond Italy. Nikolai Rimsky‐Korsakov wrote the soundtrack to the fin de siècle in his symphonic suite Scheherazade. He drew inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights, perfectly capturing the era’s fascination with the “other.” Sergei Rachmaninoff had less time for fantasy. His Piano Concerto No. 3 is a troubled reflection of oppression under Lenin. Rachmaninoff attempts to lift the spirits of the Russian people with lyrical moments and a hymnal apotheosis. Berlin‐based Kirill Gerstein returns four years after his last visit with a message of hope.
