Cine‐concert: Modern Times
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
2027 marks the 100th anniversary of the advent of sound film! Chaplin had intended to make *Modern Times* (1936) his first sound film, but in the end, the film got by entirely without dialogue. He merely added sound effects and a few songs, including the famous “Smile.” Convinced that the “Little Tramp” would lose his universality if his voice were heard, Chaplin made this film the character’s final appearance. The result is a subversive masterpiece—a critical examination of the absurdity of industrialization—featuring music composed by Chaplin himself, who was also an excellent violinist. Fifty years after his death, the OPRL honors him with a film concert featuring a live performance of his music.
