Casals Quartet
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Salle M Zaal
About the Event
The subtitle of Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 refers to the song “Death and the Maiden,” which he had composed as early as 1817. Schubert uses the same melody from “Death and the Maiden” in the slow second movement, in which Death seems to speak through the slow, deep chords. The maiden tries to resist, but Death seems to calm her with the words: “Give me your hand … sleep gently in my arms.” The entire work suggests that the composer himself was facing death: from the turbulent first movement to the demonic tarantella in the finale. The Cuarteto Casals, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, rounds out the program with works by contemporary composer Raquel García‐Tomás and an early quartet by Haydn.
