Cappella Mediterranea & the Netherlands Chamber Choir
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
The Christmas season has certain traditional hallmarks: gifts to unwrap, glasses to clink, and Mariah Carey. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) is another cherished tradition. Bach wrote the six parts of the oratorio while he was cantor in Leipzig so that it could be performed between Christmas 1734 and Epiphany 1735. As was his custom, he drew on older compositional material, and as in the Ascension Oratorio, we hear a narrator (Andreas Wolf) and an evangelist (Valerio Contaldo). Soprano Sophie Junker brings additional radiance to her arias. Look forward to a festive Christmas atmosphere with all the trimmings, including jubilant choirs, exuberant trumpets, and even an emotional lullaby (sung by countertenor Christopher Lowrey). Leonardo García‐Alarcón conducts the Nederlands Kamerkoor together with the acclaimed Cappella Mediterranea.
