About the Event

Does the nickname “Missa in angustiis” (Mass for Troubled Times) refer to the stressful composition process Joseph Haydn endured, or to the tensions on the world stage in 1798? Both this additional layer of meaning and the musical energy of the work remain relevant to this day. Cost‐cutting measures at the Esterházy court meant that the woodwinds had to be replaced by an organ, resulting in an unusual instrumentation in Haydn’s masses. W. A. Mozart’s Requiem in D minor also took on a life of its own after the composer’s death: The unfinished mass was completed by his former pupil Franz Xaver Süszmayr, whose artistry is surpassed only by the work’s mysterious atmosphere. Belgium’s pride, Vox Luminis, and the renowned Camerata Salzburg ensemble bring together these two shining examples of late 18th‐century church music.
