About the Event
What does it mean to feel at home when you set out on a journey? And what do you take with you when you arrive? In “Diaspora,” Billy Childs creates a deeply moving concert in which the saxophone serves as the traveler’s voice. Jazz, classical composition, and personal history merge into music that moves between roots and broad horizons. Steven Banks lends this voice warmth, nostalgia, and a strong individual presence. In response, Antonín Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, “From the New World,” appears in a new light. Far from a folkloric postcard, the work is imbued with longing, wonder, and inner tension. By listening attentively to both unfamiliar sounds and distant memories, Dvořák created a symphony that remains in constant motion, anchored yet always searching. An evening dedicated to identity, uprooting, and listening across borders.
