Apollo’s Fire & Jeanine De Bique
Brussels, Palais des Beaux‐Arts — Henry le Boeuf Hall
About the Event
Our portrait artist Jeanine De Bique brings the Grammy‐winning ensemble “Apollo’s Fire” across the Atlantic to Bozar. The soprano from Trinidad and the American Baroque ensemble, led by Jeannette Sorrell, shed light on the historical connections between Europe and the Caribbean colonies in the 18th century. Stories of love, despair, and resilience emerge on both sides of the ocean. A stirring aria from Handel’s “Alcina” portrays the legendary European sorceress, leading to a folk tale about the Caribbean sorceress “La Diablesse.” As the program unfolds, Purcell, Vivaldi, and Rameau encounter their poetic counterparts from the Caribbean, with whom they share a universal humanity.
