Gianni Schicchi: Teatro Comunale di Bologna
About the Event
Triptych, second station. The elegy and purgatory. Within the cloister, time stands still, enveloped in a serene calmness filled with symbols, renunciations, and expiations. Sister Genovieffa, once a shepherdess, yearns for her lambs, while Sister Angelica holds onto the nostalgia for her son who was taken away from her before she took her vows. The weight of forbidden love has caused her family to shun her, and her Aunt Princess only visits to ensure that Angelica renounces her inheritance. The harsh reality of the world breaks through the façade of artificial peace: Angelica's heart softens as she longs for her sister, seeking news of her son, while the aunt's thoughts revolve solely around money and status. With dryness in her voice, she declares that the child is dead. The dream‐like stillness shatters, causing the protagonist to transform from a victim to the master of her own destiny, empowered by the knowledge she acquired in herbalism. She takes matters into her own hands, poisoning herself, succumbing to delirium, and ultimately, as she nears death, she is embraced by the Madonna and her little son. Yet, a bittersweet ambiguity lingers: was it a miracle or merely a hallucination?
