A wonderful chamber music concert with the Opus13 Quartet part of the Bologna Festival.
The string quartet is a form in constant evolution: it spans centuries, changes language, yet preserves the intimacy of dialogue. The Opus13 Quartet, a young Norwegian ensemble, places this vocation at the heart of its programme, bringing together core repertoire and new music.
The evening opens with the world premiere of a new work by Matteo Franceschini, commissioned by Bologna Festival and Ferrara Musica, in dialogue with Beethoven’s classical energy and Bartók’s unconventional modernity. Three perspectives, three eras, one shared idea: the quartet as a laboratory of invention and listening.
NOTTURNO [Second String Quartet]
“Notturno is my second string quartet. While my first, Divertimento, drew primarily on Classical form, in Notturno it is the Romantic world that provides the principal source of inspiration.
The work unfolds in three movements, each developed from a single cell, a single musical gesture in a constant state of transformation.
The first movement, which seems to present itself from the outset almost as a conclusion, is built around a rhythmic pattern that is repeated and gradually transformed until it reaches a kind of crystallisation. From this, like a dawn, the following movement emerges.
The second movement, an Adagio, develops around the idea of a melodic sequence: a song that repeats, transforms and extends itself, almost as an intimate, chamber‐scale homage to the voice and to the Lied.
In the third movement, a chordal progression forms the generative core. The sequence returns, but is never quite the same: each repetition opens up a new possibility, reshapes what came before and leads elsewhere. It is through this continuous metamorphosis, this tension between recognition and transformation, that Notturno looks to Romanticism and its freedom of imagination, turning repetition not into a return, but into a continual possibility for invention.”
