About the Event

Violinist Aozhe Zhang and pianist Valentina Messa perform in the sumptuous Cortile dell’Archiginnasio in Bologna.

The Premio Paganini is a gateway into violin history. The Genoa competition has seen artists who now define the instrument’s absolute excellence, as shown by the triumphs of Salvatore Accardo, Gidon Kremer, Leonidas Kavakos, Isabelle Faust and Ilya Gringolts. The latest to join their ranks is the Chinese violinist Aozhe Zhang (b. 2008), who at fourteen could already master Paganini’s 24 Caprices. In his Bologna debut, he distils—across three centuries—the evolution of the dialogue between piano and violin. And the final homage to Rossini is offered by Paganini himself, bewitched—like Stendhal—by the cabaletta “Di tanti palpiti” from Tancredi.
