Thomanerchor Leipzig, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig: Bach at Philharmonie Berlin
Berlin, Philharmonie Berlin — Grosser Saal
About the Event
The THOMANERCHOR choir has a naturally close connection to Leipzig's Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach conducted the choir for 27 years, from 1723 until his death in 1750. Originating from the Augustinian canons, the famous choir—Leipzig's oldest cultural institution—has not only experienced social changes and upheavals in its 813 years of existence, but has also been and continues to be one of the most successful and oldest boys' choirs in the world, performing at important social events.
Today, the Thomanerchor is an ensemble that is as rich in tradition as it is lively. In the Philharmonie, the choir singers and renowned soloists, together with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Thomaskantor Andreas Reize, will perform Bach's Mass in B minor – the last great vocal work by their famous former artistic director. Artistic and deeply moving, this masterpiece weaves together major existential themes ranging from despair and loneliness to bliss and exuberant joie de vivre.
